82% of patients that come to see us with a denture problem have an issue related to loose dentures.

  • Do you worry about dentures affecting the foods you eat?
  • Do you worry about dentures falling out?
  • Do your loose dentures cause pain or sores?

The best way to secure dentures firmly in place is by anchoring them with dental implants.

The dental implant journey

One of the most common problems that people with dentures experience is degeneration of the bone and gum tissue over the years, causing dentures to become loose. Once this happens, you can end up experiencing all kinds of additional problems, such as pain and discomfort, being unable to eat certain foods or even having trouble speaking. If you have dentures fitted, it is important that you visit your dentist regularly so that they can check the fit of your dentures. If the fit has become loose, your dentures can be modified or you may have to order a new set.

Are there any other options?

All this is not just expensive, but time-consuming too. However, there is another way to ensure that your dentures always fit your mouth perfectly, without having to worry about a deterioration in speech or having to change your diet. By using dental and mini dental implants to ensure denture stabilisation, they can be held in place much more securely. This is not only more comfortable for the patient, but it also reduces the likelihood of bone and tissue degeneration as the dentures themselves will not move around in the mouth.

What does treatment involve?

The dental or mini dental implants themselves are fitted during a simple procedure, where a flap of tissue is lifted from the gum and a small hole drilled into the jaw. Your mouth will be numbed beforehand. Once the hole is drilled the implant, which is made of a tough metal called titanium, is screwed into place. The gum tissue is replaced and stitched and the whole area is left to heal for a few weeks. Once the dentist is happy that the implants are in place, then your dentures can be attached.

How complicated is denture stabilisation?

Denture stabilisation is a simple and safe process, as you only need a few titanium screws to hold an existing set of dentures in place. Of course, this also makes the procedure much more affordable. Any type of dentures can be stabilised using this type of treatment and the use of locators, whether fixed or removable, while mini dental implants can be used for those who have already suffered some bone deterioration.

Is the treatment painful?

Most patients find that treatment was less uncomfortable and invasive than they first thought. Anaesthetic can be used to prevent any pain during the procedure, and IV sedation is an option should you be particularly nervous about treatment. There is also the option to speak to past patients regarding the ins and outs of the procedure, to help you make an informed decision. You will be amazed at the difference denture stabilisation can make to your life. Not only will speaking and eating become easier, but you will feel more confident, knowing that your dentures are not going to move or slip out of position when you smile.
