Every Smile Needs Healthy Gums

When you consider your dental health and the appearance of your smile, it’s easy to focus on your teeth. But dental health includes your gums, the tissue that supports and surrounds your teeth.

Problems like inflamed or bleeding gums and bad breath are often symptoms of gum disease. But these issues can worsen, and gum disease can make your teeth fall out and damage your jaw.

At The Dental Suite, we care for your whole smile. From routine checkups to specialist gum treatments, we ensure you have healthy gums to support your beautiful smile.

Understanding Gum Disease

Gum disease is caused by plaque. Plaque is a sticky film that coats your teeth and gums. It contains a mix of bacteria, food debris, and
saliva. When plaque builds up on your teeth, it hardens to form tartar.

You’ll often find tartar along the gum line at the edge of your teeth. When it builds up here, it irritates the gums, causing gingivitis.

WHAT IS GINGIVITIS?

Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease. The symptoms of gingivitis are inflamed, red, or bleeding gums. This type of gum disease is reversible with treatment.

WHAT IS PERIODONTITIS?

Periodontitis is an advanced gum disease affecting the bone and ligaments around the teeth. As gum disease progresses to this stage, pockets form around the roots of your teeth. When this happens, tooth loss is likely. You can also develop abscesses, and your gums may recede.

Periodontal Examinations

Periodontitis has several stages; a complete examination helps us determine the extent of the damage and the best treatment route. This simple, painless examination uses a special instrument to check the bone level around each tooth.

At The Dental Suite, we routinely perform periodontal examinations to monitor your gum health. If we spot any problems, we’ll explain them and create a treatment and maintenance plan.

Gum Disease Prevention

Keeping plaque at bay is central in the fight against gum disease. Brush your teeth morning and night using a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. While brushing, it’s important to use techniques that don’t damage tooth enamel or gum tissue.

Flossing and using mouthwash are effective ways to remove plaque, complementing regular brushing. Visiting us for checkups and hygiene appointments will help prevent gum disease.

Fissure sealants can help your child’s teeth. This simple, preventative treatment uses resin to coat vulnerable chewing surfaces at the back of your child’s mouth.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes gum disease?

Bacterial Plaque is the major causative factor of gum disease. It is a film of bacteria, which is present in your mouth and are constantly sticking to your teeth. These bacteria quickly multiply to form layers of plaque. If not thoroughly removed minerals from your saliva precipitate into the bacterial plaque forming calculus (Tartar).

What is gingivitis?

This is the name given to inflammation of the Gingival Tissue (Gums) and occurs when bacterial plaque accumulates between the tooth and the gum. This is the first stage of gum disease and is reversible with treatment.

What is periodontitis?

Periodontitis is the name given to gum disease which has advanced to involve the periodontium. (the bone and ligament around each tooth). It is important to preserve the bone levels around your teeth in order to prevent your teeth from becoming loose.

There are many degrees of Periodontitis and the only way to diagnose the extent of the damage is with a periodontal examination. This is a simple and painless examination with a special instrument to check the bone level around each of your teeth.

At the Dental Suite we routinely carry out a gum examination to monitor your Periodontal Health. Should there be any problems, these are shown to you and explained in “simple English”. A treatment and maintenance plan is then devised to achieve optimum periodontal health. After all, your gums are the foundation for your teeth, your smile!

How can I prevent gum disease?

Thorough removal of bacterial plaque from the teeth and gums is paramount in the prevention of gum disease.

There are many recommended tooth brushing techniques and it can sometimes be a little confusing as to what we should do. It is important to remove bacterial plaque thoroughly without causing damage to the tooth enamel as this can cause sensitivity.

We advise against brushing with an up and down action and scrubbing from side to side as both of these techniques cause damage to the teeth and gums. Generally it is best to give tooth brushing advice on a one to one basis so that established habits can be reviewed and dexterity assessed.

We can also fissure seal your children’s teeth. This is a simple preventative procedure which covers the vulnerable chewing surfaces of the back teeth (molars and premolars) with a protective coating of resin (plastic) which in conjunction with dietary advice helps to prevent tooth decay.
