The Truth About Cheap Teeth Whitening Exposed

article by Raha Sepehrara

Who can relate? You’re scrolling down your social media feed and you see a reality TV star promoting an “amazing” DIY teeth whitening product that can be yours for “just” £30 or so? Or maybe your mates are posting their brand-new gleaming grins after a recent visit to the local beautician who promises to make your teeth at least 5 shades whiter within an hour?

We’re sorry to break it to you, but it’s not what it’s cracked up to be. Keep reading as we expose the truth behind cheap and often dangerous whitening.

In the society we live in today, we want things fast and cheap. However, when it comes to your teeth or any aspect of your health neither fast or cheap is a good thing.

Hydrogen Peroxide is a key bleaching agent used to whiten teeth

You may be thinking, yes but I can buy teeth whitening kits, with the same ingredients from my local Boots store for £19.99.

You’re right, you can buy it legally – a massive 0.1% of it in fact.

Spoiler alert, according to Dr Raha Sepehrara you need “at least 3%” hydrogen peroxide in order for any whitening product to be effective. Furthermore, it is illegal for any over the counter whitening product to contain more than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide. All teeth whitening products being marketed within the European Union must comply with the requirements of EC Regulation 1223/ 2009 on Cosmetic Products (the Cosmetic Products Regulation).

Yes but my local salon offers high strength whitening gel

In that case, they are breaking the law, it is illegal for anyone other than a dental professional to prescribe whitening treatment that contains more than 3% hydrogen peroxide. If you are willing to take the risk, check out this article in the Metro, illustrating the severe third-degree burns suffered by Abbie Kilbride whilst visiting a DIY teeth whitening beautician.

What could I be harming?

One of the most common side effects of teeth whitening is tooth sensitivity, described by many as "electric shocks in your teeth." A dental clinic would carry out a full assessment of your teeth and take precautions to ensure that such side effects are minimised. Naturally, this won't happen in your local salon.

If you have problems with your teeth such as tiny cavities then whitening could be a painful process and cause damage.

But I’ve been told that it’s the ultraviolet light that activates a chemical which brightens my teeth

Have you? That’s news to us. The process of leaving your mouth wide open and directing a bright light at them dehydrates your teeth. And dehydrated teeth look whiter in colour, but not for long. In fact, the effect is likely to disappear before you can even post your selfie smile on Insta!

What about if I have any dental implants or fillings?

Any dental restorations including dental implants, crowns, veneers and fillings will not be whitened. This is applicable no matter where you go to get your teeth whitened, even a dental practice will not have a product available.

Let us explain why you are in much safer hands if you choose to visit The Dental Suite

Here at The Dental Suite, we offer a range of teeth whitening products:

  • Boutique whitening
  • Professional Zoom home whitening
  • Chairside Zoom Laser whitening
  • DELUXE Enlighten Deep Bleaching

Upon arrival for your FREE consultation with a dentist, you will receive a thorough examination of your teeth, alongside a check of your medical and dental history to see if you are safe and suitable to go ahead with a teeth whitening treatment.

We will ask you what your whitening goals are, and at this stage recommend the most suitable product for you. If you are happy to go ahead, we will take a mould of your teeth and produce the clear trays which will be worn for any of our whitening treatments.

Principal Dentist at The Dental Suite, Dr Raha Sepehrara states “we cannot underline the importance of looking after your teeth enough. There are so many factors that go into the safe whitening of teeth, in some cases it might be a waste of money for a patient to get theirs done as they may not be suitable. The only way this can be determined is by them coming in and getting a thorough examination.”

You will honestly see genuine longer-lasting results

If you’ve been given the green light by one of our dental professionals, we are certain that you will have a smile transformation you can truly be proud of.

We’re not going to assure you that teeth will definitely reach a certain shade, but the majority of our cases have been lightened to at least a B1. For further information and patient testimonials please visit our website.
