Can Adults Get Invisalign? Everything You Need to Know

Article by Dr Raha Sepehrara

You may have lived your life feeling unhappy about the position of your teeth, but you may have felt like the opportunity to do something about it has passed you by. It’s common for adults to want to straighten their teeth but not know if they can.

Invisalign has changed how dentists combat issues like crooked teeth and crowded smiles. With virtually invisible removable aligners, Invisalign ticks all the boxes for adults who want straight teeth without wearing noticeable braces.

So, can adults get Invisalign? And what can they expect from the treatment?

In this article, we’ll discuss how Invisalign is the ideal solution for anyone who wants a straighter smile.

What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a leading clear aligner treatment. This popular alternative to fixed braces has improved the smiles of millions in the last two decades. Removable, comfortable, and above all else, discreet, Invisalign aligners make straightening your teeth feel almost effortless.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Like fixed braces and other removable appliances, the specially designed Invisalign aligners create a constant gentle force on your teeth. Because you will wear your aligner almost all the time, this consistent pressure they produce slowly moves your teeth.

Every Invisalign treatment is customised. We use advanced software and precision 3D scans of your smile to create bespoke treatment plans. The laboratory then produces a series of aligners made for your smile.

Each aligner is a small step in the process of aligning your smile. The next aligner in the series picks up where the last one left off.

Can Adults Have Invisalign?

The great news is that there’s no upper age limit on Invisalign. Although teenagers often receive teeth straightening treatments, it doesn’t mean it isn’t effective as you get older.

We often suggest that teens get braces or aligners earlier as, at this age, they will usually have all their permanent teeth and a more developed jaw, the treatment will have less impact on their lives, and they’re less likely to feel self-conscious about wearing an appliance while they are younger.

The beauty of Invisalign is that it’s subtle. Because it’s made from translucent materials, barely anyone will notice you’re wearing it. And, because you can remove your aligner, you can eat, drink, and brush your teeth as you normally would.

Will Invisalign Cause a Lisp?

You may take a few days to get used to wearing your aligner at first. This is perfectly normal. During this time, your tongue will have to adapt to having an aligner around your teeth, and it may feel as though there’s less room for movement while speaking.

You may develop a temporary lisp because your tongue’s position affects how certain sounds and words are formed. Don’t worry, your tongue will quickly adapt to the changes inside your mouth. Even if you feel inclined to speak less out of embarrassment, it’s important to keep talking as normal. This will help any speech issues fade quickly.

Can I Sleep While Wearing Invisalign?

Invisalign is made from a patented plastic called SmartTrack. It’s lightweight and comfortable, so it’s easy to forget it’s there once you’ve worn it for a while.

Because you should keep your aligner in for at least 22 hours each day, you will need to sleep wearing your aligner.

How Do I Care for My Invisalign Aligner?

Your aligner will be against your teeth at all times. With this in mind, it’s vital that you keep your aligner clean and brush your teeth often. You should at least brush your teeth every morning and night. Use a separate soft toothbrush and clean your aligner with warm water and soap whenever you do.

Some people carry a travel toothbrush and toothpaste when they’re out to brush their teeth after every meal.

When your aligner is not in use, keep it in a case. Storing it elsewhere could cause damage or get bacteria on it.

What Other Teeth Straightening Treatments Are Available?

Invisalign treats mild to moderate crowding, gaps, and bite alignment problems. In more severe cases, we recommend a fixed brace. Damon braces are highly effective, while lingual braces are fixed to the backs of your teeth, making them very discreet.

We also offer alternative options for milder alignments, such as Inman aligners, a fast-acting removable metal appliance. A full consultation can help you review all options.
