hygienist Leicester Loughborough Nottingham Derby

February 13th, 2011

All of us will regularly build-up a layer of tartar on our teeth, some people will get a bigger build-up than others, but everyone should have a regular professional clean. Your dentist will recommend how often you should see the hygienist.

What is a hygienist?

Dental hygienists are specially trained to work with the dentist in giving gum treatment and oral hygiene advice to patients

Why should I see a hygienist?

Dentists advise seeing the hygienist as she/he has been specially trained to carry out scaling and polishing and can spend longer with you. They are also highly experienced at showing you how to look after your teeth and gums. In some cases, you will need a number of appointments with the hygienist to get the gums healthy ready for the dentist to restore the teeth with crowns, implants or fillings.

What are the benefits of a professional clean with the hygienist?

-       Healthier teeth and gums

-       Fresher breath

-       Higher success of dental treatments such as veneers, implants, teeth straightening etc

-       Positive effects on your general health

How can a hygienist visit benefit my general health?

Recent research has found a link between gum disease and heart disease. Scientists have found that bacteria responsible for gum disease could travel in your bloodstream and potentially harm your heart.

What are the signs of gum disease?

-       Gum bleeding

-       Gum swelling

-       Purple-red gums

-       Bad breath

Gum disease at the early stages can be reversed without permanent damage to your bone and gums. If gum disease progresses then the damage will be permanent and gums and bone around the teeth will shrink eventually causing teeth to become loose and potentially fall out.

Dental Implant Treatment Planning Is Very Important

This is a recent example, of a new patient I saw who had 9 implants placed in his mouth last year at a clinic abroad.

failedimplant1failed-implants2
His presenting complaint was that his implants were fracturing, were becoming loose and his overdenture would not fit.  He explained he did not want to see the dentist who carried this out as he was not confident in his abilities. I asked why he chose to have extensive work done abroad. He explained because of price.

Unfortunately I see many cases like this.  It is very important to carry out through research when having dental implants placed. Of course price is always an issue, but be aware having cheap work done then cheaper materials may be used and short cuts will be taken, as in this case. Remember all implants are not the same and all crowns and bridges are not the same.  Also it is important the clinician has extensive postgraduate experience. Unfortunately in this case this is not the case. The implants were placed poorly and placed in the wrong positions meaning no stents were used. Also there has been no proper thought into the engineering of the case.

In this particular case I had to remove all his implants , which meant extensive bone loss. If this patient wants implants again he will know require major bone reconstruction from his hip. His original fee abroad was £15000……now it would be £30000, with extensive surgery. He would also require a 4 night say in hospital because of the hip graft.
So the key points are
•    Ask to see the clinicians past cases.
•    Ask to see the clinicians cv
•    Use good quality dental implants and well constructed crowns and bridges. All my patients visit my technician to understand about the constructions process and shade match. Many of them are surprised by the extensive work which is required behind the scene.

The following is an example of a case which we planned correctly from the beginning using high quality materials and experienced technicians. If done correctly from the beginning the patient will be protecting there investment. The patient was ecstatic when we finished her treatment , as she could eat again and have a confident smile.

HIGH QUALITY CROWNS IN LEICESTER

This Leicester  patient presented to me unhappy about her crown done at another dental practice. The photos show an unsightly crown on the upper left central tooth. It also shows the inflammation of the gums due to them being poorly contoured and designed. This would have caused extensive damage to the gums and bone if it had been left like this.

After our consultation I recommended the following
•    To see our great hygienist, Rebecca, to reduce the inflammation of the gums
•    Remove the old crown and to place a temporary crown to “coach” the gum back into healthy status
•    Prepare the tooth for a high quality all ceramic crown and then cement this crown 1 week later.

The patient was ecstatic with the final result.
The key point’s are
•    There are no short cuts if you want a quality result
•    Price is important but be aware cheap is not always best. Remember when having cosmetic work you are paying for the skill and experience of the clinician, the artistic ability of the technician and high quality materials.
•    Ask to see past cases of your dentist and postgraduate qualifications.

Root canal treatment

December 10th, 2010

When do I need a root canal treatment?

When the nerves of a tooth are infected a patient will complain of pain from the tooth in question. The pain will be worse on biting and more intense whilst sleeping and the pain will stay on for a while.

The treatment options for an infected nerve are:

- root canal treatment

- take out the tooth

A root canal treatment therefore consists in making a hole in the tooth to take out the infected nerves and to put some medication in the canal where the nerves used to be in order to kill the bacteria. Once the pain and infection have gone away, typically after 2-3 weeks, the canals will be sealed with a rubber filling and the tooth will be closed off with a normal filling. In many cases, a crown will be needed after the root canal treatment to strengthen the tooth.
