Acid erosion in kids

Both Kal and I have recently noticed that a lot of teenagers are suffering from acid erosion. I just had a young patient from Nottingham who drinks over 1 litre of Cola a day and his teeth were showing the signs of acid erosion.

Fizzy drinks, fruit and juices are all very acidic and most people do not realise the harm that these do on our teeth.

Acid causes teeth to erode, making them look more translucent, eventually making them thinner and smaller over the years. Not only do the teeth change in appearance but they become very sensitive too.

It is very important to limit the amount of fizzy drinks our children have. Parents also have to keep an eye on their children’s intake of fruit juices and fruits, like orange, lemon, apples.

I have known of a lady in Leicester who sucks on lemons daily and has come to us complaining about sensitivity and about the appearance of her teeth.

Consultations - why are they so important?

Sometimes both Kal and I get patients emailing us enquiring whether they are suitable for certain treatments, asking us for costs and appropriate treatments. Sometimes we even get photographs emailed to us from places all over the country, from nearby Leicester to Glasgow.

Unfortunately, it is virtually impossible for us to diagnose a problem and to come up with the best treatment and costs without actually seeing the patient! It is absolutely fundamental to go to the dentist so that:

-full detailed medical history is taken

-full thorough dental check up of the mouth and teeth is carried out

-radiographs are taken

 

only in this way can a dentist come up with a diagnosis and a treatment plan best suited for the individual. Each person is different and therefore each one of us will need different types of treatments.

Clearstep

Here at the Dental Suite in Loughborough, we have been offering invisible braces for a while now. We offer both Invisalign and Clearstep.

We are one of the first dental practices in Leicestershire that offer Clearstep. Clearstep have recently introduced a new and invisible appliance called CODA, this appliance is very comfortable to wear and noone can see that you are wearing one. The advantage of the CODA is that it speeds up treatment considerably, one CODA carries out the same amounts of movement that 8 aligners would do.  The desired movements are achieved in 6-8 weeks, as opposed to aligners which take 16 weeks.

It is a great new invention from Clearstep and we are very pleased to be able to offer this type of treatment to our patients.
