Dental Tourism

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

We are all ware of the increase in popularity of dental tourism. More and more people are going abroad for cosmetic surgery and for dental treatment because of the lower costs of treatment.  I am sure there are plenty of skilled dentists and doctors abroad, but what happens if something goes wrong?

A recent report from the British Dental Health Foundation (BDHF) advises against having medical treatments abroad. A Survey carried out by The BDHF showed that 1 in 5 medical tourists had problems after treatment abroad. It also revealed that more than 25 % of the patients felt they did not get the after care required and 18% of patients had complications. Overall only 57% were happy with the treatment.

It is important to understand that implant surgery is a complex surgery and requires regular maintanance and if this is not done, the implants are more likely to fail.

We see new patients that have been abroad for treatment and have had problems and they come to us for reparative work. We recently had a patient from Derby who had been to an Easter European country and was suffering from complications due to the implant surgery.

So my advise is search for an experienced surgeon and don’t choose the dentist/doctor just on the basis of low cost. It is important to find out about the surgeon , their  postgraduate qualifications and experience, do not choose someone just because they offer cheap treatment. People shop for a cheap implant dental surgeon but would they shop for a cheaper heart surgeon?

Mouth Cancer Awareness Walk

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

The Dental Suite Team is taking part in a sponsored walk to raise awareness on oral cancer. The walk is on 20th September 2008 in Hyde Park, London.

The risk of developing mouth cancer is linked with alcohol and cigarette consumption. It has been shown that a good healthy diet can help prevent cancer.

Mouth cancer is rare, but unfortunately the survival rates are low as it’s often detected when it’s too late. One of the main reasons why it is essential to go to your dentist regularly is to have your mouth checked regularly so that if there is anything abnormal and sinister (usually rare) this is detected early.

TO learn more about mouth cancer go on http://www.rdoc.org.uk/.

We have already started fundraising. If you wish to donate money to this charity you can do so either at the practice or online on www.justgiving.com/thedentalsuite

Postgraduate Education for a Cosmetic Dentist

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

Kal has just got back from an aesthetics course ran by a famous American dentist. He came back to Loughborough feeling very enthusiastic as he felt he had gained so much from this experience. Both Kal and myself are very keen on attending courses all around the country and the world. In this way we ensure that we are always aware of the new technologies and are always improving our knowledge and skills.

We have come across many people asking us how do you find a good dentist. Our response is always:

- look at their postgraduate qualifications

-look at their before and after cases

-ask to speak to existing patients

-ask you family and friends

Therefore, a good cosmetic dentist will have attended a lot of courses worldwide and will have a great portfolio of cases to show as well. Many of our patients who come from Nottingham, Derby, Leicester and Loughborough and other parts of the UK are shown a slideshow of cases on their initial consultation.

Make sure you do your research when looking for a good, experienced dentist
