A healthy diet for a healthy mouth

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

10 years younger returned on tv last night. During the programme we saw the amazing transformation of a mother of 5. She had plastic surgery, advise on make up, clothes and hair. She also had a smile makeover. She ended up having 7 filling and 4 veneers and crowns.

The dentist on the programme discussed the strong link between a high sugar diet and tooth decay. The mother of 5 admitted she has over 20 cups of tea a day with 2 teaspoons of sugar. The amount of sugar she was ingesting was huge and that explained why she required so many fillings.

Both Kal and myself have patients asking us why they get decay when they brush their teeth twice daily, floss and use mouthwash daily. The reason for their decay is their diet, ie the amount of sugar in the food. The obvious foods are chocolates and sweets, more hidden sugars are the ones in fizzy drinks and foods like baked beans and ketchup. It is very important to carry out a diet analysis to find which are the foods causing the decay so that these foods can be avoided. I recently had a child patient from West Bridgeford who had a lot of decay and had to go through diet analysis and oral hygiene instruction with the parents to insure we can prevent more decay on the rest of the teeth.

Dental Implants

Monday, May 26th, 2008

Implants have been around for many decades and they have shown to be the best way of replacing missing teeth.

A dental implant is basically a screw that acts as a root onto which a crown, a bridge or a denture can be attached.

Kal places many implants every week and I have seen many of his cases. He has had patients from all over the country, from  Nuneaton to Nottingham, from Loughborough to Scotland, coming to see him and to have implants done by him. He has had great results, this is due to his careful planning and excellent surgical skills. He uses a great lab technician who is also highly skilled and this guarantees that the crowns, dentures or bridges that he places look as  natural as possible.

I had a dental implant done by Kal last year. I had a gap in the region of my lower first molar and was fed up with the gap as I found it very irritating. I no have a procelain crown attached to the implant and it looks so natural. When I show the implant to my friends and colleagues, no one can believe that tooth is not natural!

We have been offering botox at our practice in Leicestershire for a while now and we have achieved great results.

Botox is a very simple, safe and quick procedure. It helps to smoothen out wrinkles and also can help prevent wrinkles.  Patients from all over the Midlands and Europe,  ie Nottingham, Leicester, Birmingham, even Italy have come to our practice to receive this treatment.

I reviewed a lovely lady from Melton Mowbray today who had her treatment just over two weeks ago. Dental Veneers

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

More and more people have become aware about veneers as a way to achieve beautiful white smiles. Programmes like extreme makeover and 10 years younger have shown some of the results that can be achieved with veneers.

Veneers are a great way of masking discoloured teeth,  reshaping broken or chipped teeth, and aligning slighly tilted teeth. Veneers are very thin porcelain facets that are cemented on teeth to cover any small defects in natural teeth.

Katie Price, aka Jordan, recently admitted on her TV programme that she had veneers done to improve her smile. While flicking through a magazine I also noticed many other celebrities that had amazing smile makeovers. Some of these celebrities include Kate Beckinsale, Martine McCutcheon, Hillary Duff, Tom Cruise.

I recently saw one of Kal’s patients from Oadby, Leicestershire who had a complete smilemakeover done with veneers and she just look great, it was such an amazing transformation!

Looking after your gums

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

Your gums are the foundation of our teeth, gums, together with the periodontal ligament and the surrounding bone are what hold your teeth in.

When the oral hygiene is not to a good standard, plaque - which is made of bacteria and debris- accumalates around the teeth.

If this plaque is not removed, gums will start bleeding, swelling up will appear red. This is called gingivitis. This is a form of gum disease and it is reversible. Once oral hygiene improves, gums will tend to go back to health.

If the plaque is not removed over a long time, the damage to the gum and surrounding bone becomes permanent. Both gums and bone will start receding and eventually teeth may become loose. This is called periodontitis. Unfortunately, gums and bone cannot be put back, but the disease can be arrested by improving oral hygiene so that teeth do not become more loose.

Therefore it is essential to have an impeccable oral hygiene to reduce the risk of tooth loss. Make sure you brush your teeth twice a day and you use floss and mouthwash everyday. It is also very important to visit the dentist and hygienist regularly. Our patients all understand the importance of healthy gums, no matter how far the journey to the practice is, whether from Nottingham or London, they will always attend for their hygiene appointment.

Nervous Patients

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

Everyday we meet new patients or speak to people who are absolutely terrified of the dentist.

These fears usually develop following a past bad experience at the dentist. Some people are so petrified of having dental treatment that avoid going to the dentists for decades.

Here at the Dental Suite, we have experience in treating anxious patients and have been doing so for over 20 years. Because we are so experienced, we getting patients from all over the country, from Loughborough, Leicester, Plymouth, Scotland.

The various techniques we use are:

- behaviour modification

-oral sedation

-IV sedation

We believe we can succesfully help some anxious patients beat their fears by treating them in a calm relaxing environment. Our team are very friendly and approachable and manage to make all our patients feel at ease.

Oral sedation and IV sedation are also great techniques to help nervous patients get through dental treatment. Sedation will make you more relaxed when being treated and you will not remember much about the treatment either.

Many of our patients who used to be petrified of the dentists have told us that they have managed to beat their fears since coming to the Dental Suite

Botox and Dentistry

Monday, May 5th, 2008

Yesterday I came across an article on the Sunday Telegraph reporting on the increase in number of dentists carrying out facial rejuvenation procedures, like Botox and dermal fillers. Here at the Dental Suite we also offer these treatments.

I truly believe that dentists are the best at providing this sort of treatments for the following reasons:

- we have a thorough knowledge of facial anatomy, which is essential when carrying out such procedures

- we give hundreds of injections a week and we are good at giving painless injections

Great results can be achieved with Botox and fillers.

With Botox we can iron out frown lines, horizontal forhead lines, crow’s feet and we can also do brow lifts to achieve a more feminine arched brow. Botox is not only for women, there are an increasing number of men seeking this treatment.

Dermal fillers are great to smoothen smile lines, smokers lines around lips and to plump up lips. I recently treated a lovely lady from Leicester and the results were fantastic!

Cosmetic Dentistry and Celebrities

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

We are all aware of the big boom in cosmetic dentistry in recent times. It all started with programmes like Extreme Makeovers and 10 years younger. More and more celebrities are having cosmetic dentistry to increase their confidence and improve their appearance. Some famous stars who have undergone cosmetic dental procedures are Tom Cruise, Celine Dion and Kate Beckinsale. The smile makeovers had  a great impact on these celebrities careers.

More recently, I was flicking through the American version of InStyle magazine and came across an interview of Katherine Heigl, the blonde bombshell from Grey’s Anatomy and Knocked Up. Ms Heigl admitted to be wearing Invisalign braces as she was unhappy with the position of a particular tooth. The journalist interviewing her was completely surprised by the fact this invisible braces were truly invisible!

Here at the Dental Suite in Leicestershire, we offer invisible braces as well as other cosmetic dental procedures. Invisible braces are very popular among adults wishing to straighten their teeth as they are hardly noticeable. Great results can be achieved with Invisalign.
