A Loughborough based cosmetic dental surgeon has reported a large recent increase in the number of patients taking advantage of more revolutionary procedures in order to achieve the perfect smile.
Dr Kalpesh Bohara from the Dental Suite believes the popularity of teeth whitening and veneers has led to patients becoming more willing to undertake more complex procedures such as dental implants.
Dr Bohara comments: "Achieving perfect teeth is now much higher on people’s health and beauty agenda than it was ten years ago. Teeth whitening and other cosmetic procedures are now common place, however a more recent development is the increased interest in dental implants. These are ideal for people who may feel that their teeth are beyond repair or they have had to get used to false teeth due to gum disease."
A dental implant is a titanium metal rod which is placed into the jawbone. It is used to support one or more false teeth. Patients can have any number of teeth replaced with implants – from one single tooth to a complete set.
Dr Bohara continues: "Although implants require a small operation, they are a well-established, tried-and-tested treatment. There are advantages too. An implant to replace a single tooth avoids the need to cut down the teeth either side for crowns to support a bridge. Normal dentures often mean you can’t eat or speak well, due to the dentures moving about. But teeth attached to an implant don’t cause this problem. And the cost of the treatment is only a little more than the cost of more conventional treatment with high quality crowns and bridges."
